Endocannabinoid system protects glioma cells against Tat-induced cytotoxicity

The endocannabinoid system ameliorates the cytotoxic effects of the HIV Tat protein on murine brain cells, researchers in Italy say.

"Cannabinoids modulate nitric oxide (NO) levels in cells of the central nervous system," explained G. Esposito and coauthors at the University of Naples, who "studied the effect of cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptor agonists on the release of NO and cell toxicity induced by the human immuno-deficiency virus-1 Tat protein (HIV-1 Tat) in rat glioma C6 cells."
