HTLV Type I

Associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis cluster found in Argentina

The Jujuy Province of Argentina is home to a cluster of cases of greater human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), scientists report.

This finding, along with previously reported cases in the neighboring province of Salta, cause microbiologists at the University of Buenos Aires to think this area - the Puna Jujena region - may be a "microepidemic focus of disease" related to HTLV-I, a retrovirus.

"Compared with other regions in Argentina, HTLV-I seroprevalence has been reported in Jujuy Province, where it reaches 2.32% in the general population, so that a search for [HAM/TSP] cases...
