New virus load assay reported comparable with Roche commercial kit, but cheaper

An international team of scientists has developed a viral load assay that they claim yields comparable results to Roche's commercial kit, but that is about five times less expensive.

In a poster presentation at the 10th conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, S.A. Alabi and colleagues noted that "there are no commercial kits capable of measuring both HIV-2 and HIV-1 virus loads, while the high price of available HIV-1 assays are beyond the reach of most laboratories in the developing world."
