Surrogate endpoints in HIV vaccine studies discussed

A group of researchers from several institutions have proposed two surrogate endpoints for HIV vaccine efficacy trials: pre-antitretroviral therapy (ART) viral load trajectories and a composite endpoint defined as either virologic failure (above a threshold) or ART initiation.

P. Gilbert, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, presented the team's arguments at the 10th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, held in Boston, Massachusetts, earlier in 2003.
