HIV infection accelerates liver fibrosis in those coinfected with hepatitis C

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Medical investigators have presented evidence linking human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) with heightened fibrosis progression in patients coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV).

The investigators work at the Guys Kings' and St. Thomas School of Medicine in London, U.K., where they analyzed the liver biopsies of 135 patients with HCV infections and 55 others coinfected with HIV. Researchers used statistical analysis to identify those elements most likely to correlate with fibrosis progression among the study enrollees.
