Cytotoxic T lymphocyte-based strategies ineffective over long term

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - HIV vaccine strategies based on inducing antiviral cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses may not be effective over the long term, researchers in the United States warn.

Virus-specific CTL "are critical for control of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 replication," explained Dan H. Barouch and colleagues at Harvard Medical School in Boston and Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. "However, viral escape from CTL recognition can undermine this immune control."
