Interleukin-15 plays key role in response to invasive aspergillosis

The cytokine interleukin (IL)-15 plays a key role in the immune response to invasive aspergillosis.

In a recent study from the United States, the effects of IL-15 "on human polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) activity against Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus were investigated."

"Pretreatment with IL-15 for two hours increased PMNL oxidative burst, as measured by superoxide anion (O2 (-)) release in response to A. fumigatus (p<0.05) but not to A. flavus," noted R.M. Winn and coauthors at the National Cancer Institute.
