African Americans have higher HIV rates and AIDS mortality

African Americans have higher rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection than whites and other ethnic groups, are more likely to develop full-blown acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and are more likely to die from complications of AIDS.

A report in the October 2003 issue of AIDS Patient Care and STDs reviews the disparities in HIV infection rates in African Americans, the reasons for these differences, issues concerning adherence to drug regimens and patient compliance, and approaches to managing African-American patients that can help increase awareness and knowledge of risk factors for disease and improve diagnosis and treatment.
