Oxidative DNA damage underlies mitochondrial effects of cancer, HIV drugs

Oxidative damage to nuclear DNA underlies the deleterious effects of cancer and HIV drugs on mitochondria.

"Depletion of the mitochondrial genome is involved in several human diseases, as well as in mitochondrial diseases induced by drug therapies used in the treatment of cancer and human immunodeficiency virus," scientists in New York explained.
