Three Maryland groups share part of federal AIDS grant

Three agencies based in Maryland are among five groups that will receive a $335 million grant from the U.S. government to help combat the spread of the AIDS virus in Africa and Haiti.

The grants are among the first awarded since President Bush and the U.S. Congress approved a 5-year, $15 billion plan to care for people infected with HIV, prevent new infections, and support orphan children whose parents died from the AIDS.

The Maryland organizations include Catholic Relief Charities and the Institute of Human Virology, both based in Baltimore, and Interchurch Medical Assistance of New Windsor in Carroll County. Also sharing in the grant are Catholic...
