New fluoroquinolones should be used in P-lactam-allergic patients to prevent resistance.

According to a study from South Africa, "Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the most common bacterial cause of community-acquired pneumonia, and these infections are associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. A major concern is the increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance among pneumococcal isolates, which, in the case of certain of the antibiotic classes, has been associated with treatment failure.
