Rapid HIV testing during labor links HIV-positive pregnant women to treatment

New U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research shows that rapid HIV testing using the OraQuick Rapid HIV-1 Antibody Test during labor is effective for helping mothers to stay healthy and prevent HIV infection in infants.

Researchers led by CDC's Dr. Marc Bulterys analyzed data from CDC's Mother-Infant Rapid Intervention At Delivery (MIRIAD) study, which provided counseling and voluntary rapid HIV testing using the rapid finger-stick test to women with unknown HIV status in labor at 16 U.S. hospitals in six cities between November 2001 and September 2003. The findings were presented at the XV International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.
