Virus escape variants are persistent

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are a component of the immune system that is critical for identifying and killing cells infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or the monkey immunodeficiency virus SIV.

These viruses escape immune system detection by developing mutations that prevent CTLs from recognizing them. Whether and how these mutants persist is an important issue for understanding the effectiveness of vaccines.
