MHC Haplotype Project details third of eight most common human haplotypes

Sequence differences in less than 0.2% of the 3-billion-base human genome play a vital role in a bewildering variety of human disease. Recent research has provided some insight into the haplotypes, combinations of gene and sequence variants, for several of the most common diseases.

An international group of researchers, including scientists at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Cambridge University's Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, reported in the January 26, 2006, edition of PLoS Genetics their detailed maps of differences implicated in disease as well as genes that are unchanged in recent human history.
