"We report a case of temporary impaired hemoglobin scavenging in a patient with an acute HIV-1 retroviral syndrome. The patient was presented at the emergency department in a severe inflammatory state, mimicking bacterial sepsis and/or hemophagocytic syndrome," scientists writing in the journal Clinica Chimica Acta report.

"The serum showed a hemolytic aspect. In contrast, serum haptoglobin concentration was not decreased.
