Genetic target found for lymphoma treatment

Results from a preclinical study show that the gene designated Bcl-6 is an oncogene - that is, one with the potential to cause a normal cell to become cancerous - but that certain peptide inhibitors can in effect inactivate it, according to a study presented during the 46th annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology. Every year, more than 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) - the most common form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and the focus of this study - comprises about a third of those cases.
