Biopharmaceutical company tackles ALS using two new approaches

CytRx Corporation (CYTR) is researching potential therapies for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig disease)using both orally administered small molecules and RNA interference (RNAi), one of the most talked-about recent scientific breakthroughs.

ALS is a disorder affecting the function of nerves and muscles. Over 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year (15 new cases a day). It is estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time, with at least 120,000 people afflicted worldwide. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages between 2 and 5 years from the time of diagnosis, and only half of all affected live...
