Louisiana health department may limit Medicaid-paid Viagra

Louisiana's health chief wants taxpayers to pay for fewer Viagra pills for those who get insurance through the government's Medicaid program. Limiting state payments for the male impotency drug is one of the ways Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Fred Cerise is trying to cut Medicaid spending on procedures and drugs for which there is no proven medical necessity. Cerise, a physician, signed a notice of intent to reduce from six to one the number of doses of erectile dysfunction pills, such as Viagra, the state's Medicaid program will pay for each month.
