Liposomal amphotericin B safe and effective for fungal infection treatment

A liposomal formulation of amphotericin B is a safe and effective treatment for fungal infections in acute leukemia patients.

In a recent study from Italy, the "incidence of fungal infections and the role of liposomal amphotericin B (Ambisome) in proven and probable infections were evaluated in acute leukemic patients, intolerant to conventional amphotericin B."

"During 1999-2002, 307 febrile episodes occurred in 231 patients," noted R. Fanci and coauthors working at Careggi Hospital in Florence. "Fungi were responsible for 3% of bloodstream infections."
