Report examines how noncompliance affects hospital admissions, deaths

Patient noncompliance contributes to 125,000 deaths and up to 20% of all annual hospital and nursing home admissions, according to "Pharmaceutical Patient Compliance and Disease Management," a report from business intelligence firm Cutting Edge Information.

The report also states that 70% of all medical prescriptions go unconsumed, leading to $77 billion in excess healthcare costs each year. In addition, 40% of patients who receive outpatient drug therapy will experience a treatment failure or new medical problem as a result of improper use.
