Combination of Medication and Psychotherapy Appears Most Effective for Treatment of depression

The combination of the antidepressant medication fluoxetine and cognitive behavior therapy appears more effective than either strategy alone for the long-term treatment of adolescents with depression, according to a report in the Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Major depressive disorder affects approximately 5 percent of adolescents, causing difficulties for patients and their families and increasing the risk for suicide, according to background information in the article.
