Molecular mechanisms of BKPC protective effects during cardiac surgery identified

Bradykinin preconditioning improves the profile of cell survival proteins and limits apoptosis after cardioplegic arrest.

Scientists writing in the journal Circulation report, "We hypothesized that preconditioning the heart with bradykinin (BK) would improve the profile of antiapoptotic proteins and inhibit myocardial apoptosis."

J. Feng and colleagues of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston explained, "Eighteen rabbit hearts were retrogradely perfused with Krebs-Henseleit buffer (KHB).
