Revenues increase 11% in first quarter for biotech company

Biogen, Inc., (BGEN) announced financial results for the first quarter of 2003. For the 3 months ended March 31, 2003, total revenues were $321 million, an increase of 11% over the first quarter of 2002. Reported net income in the first quarter of 2003 was $64 million, or $0.42 per share. In the first quarter of 2002, reported net income was $72 million, or $0.47 per share. Operating results in the first quarter of 2003 exclude charges of $16 million to other income (expense) related to a legal settlement with Rentschler Biotechnologie GmbH related to an intellectual property dispute and a write-down of certain investments.
