New mechanism reverses diabetes symptoms

New research on the transplantation of bone marrow-derived stem cells has provided the first evidence that adult stem cells can induce pancreatic tissue to repair itself, restoring normal insulin production and reversing symptoms associated with diabetes. The study, led by Robarts scientist Dr. Mick Bhatia with the participation of Dr. David Hill of the Lawson Health Research Institute, Dr. Douglas Gray of Ottawa's Centre for Cancer Therapeutics and Dr. Seiji Sakano of Asahi Kasei Corp., Japan, was published in the July 2003 issue of Nature Biotechnology.
