First biologic recommended by FDA panel for inflammatory disease

Amgen (AMGN) and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (WYE), announced that Enbrel (etanercept) is the first biologic recommended for approval by the Arthritis Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). "We are pleased with the committee's unanimous positive vote and will work closely with the FDA to bring Enbrel to ankylosing spondylitis patients, who until now, have had limited options in the treatment of the disease," said Beth Seidenberg, Amgen's senior vice president of development.
