New generation of vaccines to be tested

Two new investigational smallpox vaccines will be studied as part of a clinical trial starting soon at St. Louis University's Center for Vaccine Development. St. Louis University is the only location in the United States participating in the trial. The investigational vaccines, manufactured by Massachusetts-based Acambis, Inc., will be compared with the existing smallpox vaccine, known as Dryvax. The new vaccines were produced using modern methods of cell cultivation.
