Students' smoking rate declines during past 2 decades

Fewer kids smoke today and more think it's a bad idea than adolescents did 20 years ago, according to surveys taken 2 decades apart in one Midwestern county.

Compared to their predecessors in 1980, more middle school and high school students in 2001 had never smoked and there was a small drop in regular smokers, said Laurie Chassin, PhD, of Arizona State University, and colleagues. Their findings were published in Health Psychology.

Teenagers in 2001 were more likely to view smoking as more addictive and less "nice," "fun" or "pleasant" than those in 1980. These negative attitudes may have contributed to the declines in smoking recorded in the...
