Effects of intranasal saline sprays on ciliary beat frequency compared

The effects of different intranasal saline sprays on ciliary beat rate have been compared.

"There are conflicting reports regarding the effect of intranasal saline sprays on the various components of the mucociliary clearance system," scientists in Australia explained.

To help resolve these conflicts, D.A.M. Wabnitz and colleagues at Adelaide and Flinders Universities evaluated "the effect of normal saline and hypertonic saline on the ciliary beat frequency (CBF)" in a recent study.

"Eight healthy volunteers were randomized to receive 0.9% saline spray to one nostril and 3.0% saline spray to the other," the investigators said....
