Genetic switch for maturation discovered

Working with fruit flies, researchers have discovered a genetic switch that appears to control an array of intricate processes required for the fly to mature from a slug-like larva to a mobile, sexually active fly. The researchers said their discovery in the fly Drosophila could provide insights into how sexual maturation occurs in higher animals, including humans. The researchers, led by Carl S. Thummel, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at the University of Utah School of Medicine, published their findings in the June 3, 2005, issue of the journal Cell.
