Crystal L. Mackall et al., from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, suggest that an important step in developing treatment strategies for CD4+ T-lymphocyte reconstitution improvement in disease states, is to clarify the relative importance of thymus-dependent and thymus-independent pathways ("Age, Thymopoiesis, and CD4+ T-lymphocyte Regeneration after Intensive Chemotherapy," New England Journal of Medicine, January 19, 1995; 332:143-9).
