FDA Approves Hepatitis A Virus Vaccine

SmithKline Beecham, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has licensed SmithKline Beecham Biologicals to market Havrix (Hepatitis A Vaccine, Inactivated), the world's first hepatitis A vaccine.

The vaccine is indicated for active immunization in people at risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, including travelers to Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, South and Central America, Africa, Asia (except Japan), the Mediterranean basin, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Havrix, manufactured by SmithKline Beecham Biologicals and distributed by SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, provides protection against hepatitis A.
