Allogeneic Transfusion Not Associated with Septic Complications

Researchers stated that their study did not detect increased incidence of septic complications following elective hip replacement surgery in patients who received allogeneic blood transfusion, when compared with patients who received autologous red cells or no transfusion.

E.C. Vamvakas and colleagues, Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota, conducted a retrospective review of the incidence of postoperative septic complications in patients residing in Olmsted County, Minnesota, who underwent elective total hip arthroplasties ("Blood Transfusion and Septic Complications after Hip Replacement Surgery," Transfusion, February 1995;35(2):150-156).
