According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 36th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology, held December 2-6, 1994, in Nashville, Tennessee, "To assess the efficacy of high dose therapy (HDT) as front-line treatment in young patients with MM, we initiated in 1990 a multicenter randomized clinical trial. After successful autologous blood stem cell (ABSC) collection, patients under 55 years with newly diagnosed MM were randomly allocated to receive either HDT supported with ABSCT (HDT group) or conventional VMCP regimen (VMCP group).
