European Union Designs Plan for Blood Safety and Self Sufficiency

The European Commission has designed a six-point plan to ensure blood safety as well as self sufficiency in the European Union.

According to a report by European correspondent Rory Watson, the strategy is in response to last year's (1994) request on the part of health ministers for an investigation into legal provisions and current practices regarding blood and blood products, with the aim of agreeing on common safety criteria ("Making Europe's Blood Safer," British Medical Journal, January 21, 1995;310:147).
