"Indefinite Deferral" of Donors Diagnosed With Malaria

Potential blood donors who have had a malaria diagnosis will face an "indefinite deferral" in the acceptance of their blood under guidelines reaffirmed recently by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).

At the meeting of its board of directors February 2-4, 1995, AABB voted not to change its Standard B2.650, which provides for the indefinite deferral of potential donors who have had a diagnosis of malaria. The standard is more conservative than a standard approved July 26, 1994 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA standard mandated a three-year deferral for asymptomatic persons who previously had been diagnosed with malaria.
