Autologous Blood Donation May Have Limited Value

The increased cost of autologous blood donations, coupled with the limited protection of the procedure, may not be justified today, researchers suggested.

Despite reports of dangers associated with blood transfusion, significant improvements have been made in the safety of the blood supply, noted Jeff Etchason, M.D., University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, Los Angeles, California, and colleagues ("The Cost Effectiveness of Preoperative Autologous Blood Donations," the New England Journal of Medicine, March 16, 1995;332(11):719-724).
