Simultaneous Acute HBV and HCV Infection Is Documented

Researchers described what they believe to be the first case of simultaneous acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection that was documented serologically and virologically.

Chia-Ming Chu, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, and Yun-Fan Liaw, Chang Gung Medical College, Taipei, Taiwan, stated that the case of simultaneous acute HBV and HCV infection led to fulminant hepatic failure, relapse of hepatitis and chronic hepatitis C ("Simultaneous Acute Hepatitis B Virus and Hepatitis C Virus Infection Leading to Fulminant Hepatitis and Subsequent Chronic Hepatitis C," Clinical Infectious Diseases, March 1995;20:703-705).
