Chagas' Disease Plagues Poor in Bolivia

More than half of the 3.5 million people living in Bolivia face the risk of infection from Chagas disease, a debilitating tropical disease that thrives in slum dwellings.

Coping with the disease is costly and Bolivia, among the poorest nations in Latin America, lags behind other regional nations in its elimination.

Health experts say the parasite that causes the sickness - trypanosoma cruzi - is passed on in the fecal matter of the vinchuca beetle (Triatoma infestans), which reproduces in the unsanitary conditions of the slums.
