Risk-Factor Donor Deferral Is Feasible and Effective in Africa

Study findings in Zimbabwe challenge the assumption that the deferral of blood donors with risk factors for HIV is not feasible in sub-Saharan Africa.

Numerous factors have hindered the prevention of transfusion-associated HIV in Africa. In fact, an earlier survey showed that transfusion services in eight of 29 sub-Saharan African nations that responded were not required to screen collected blood for HIV antibodies.
