Experts Recommend Leukocyte Depletion Should Be Standard

Three experts in the field of blood transfusion have stressed the benefits of using a leukocyte filter for patients requiring blood transfusion.

"I personally believe, and I teach my surgical students, that white cell filtration should be a standard for all patients, for all surgical patients," stated Richard K. Spence, M.D., head of General Vascular Surgery and surgeon at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center, Camden, New Jersey. "The practice of blood filtration minimizes transfusion risks and should be a priority for all patients."
