Test Blood for HHV-6

Published in Blood Weekly, July 31st, 1995

Because human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6) causes disease - and because it is now possible to test blood for HHV-6 DNA - vulnerable recipients of blood and blood products should be protected against this pathogen.

In November 1994, this publication argued in an editorial that "measures should be enacted to prevent transfusion of HHV-6-infected blood to immunocompromised or HHV-6-seronegative patients."

The editorial noted that:

  • HHV-6 can infect and destroy CD4+ T cells.

  • HHV-6 has greatly enhanced cytopathicity in cells co-infected with HIV-1.

  • HHV-6 upregulates HIV expression.
