HIV-2 Seen in Blood Donations

HIV-2, rare in the United States, was found in two blood donations in 1994 and kept out of the nation's blood supply, the government said.

Three years ago, blood banks began testing for both HIV-1, and HIV-2, which strikes mostly in West Africa.

Just 62 of 476,899 people with AIDS in the United States are infected with HIV-2, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most had some connection to West Africa.

The nation's blood supply remains safe, said Dr. John Ward, chief of the CDC's AIDS surveillance branch. No one in the United States has been infected with HIV-2 through a blood transfusion, he...
