According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 19th International Congress of Chemotherapy, held July 16-21, 1995, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, "In the clinical microbiology laboratory, the ability to accurately quantitate an infectious agent has practical utility in the area of diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring therapy. Traditionally, quantitation of microorganisms has relied on the ability to grow organisms in the laboratory in a substrate allowing enumeration of colony forming units, focus/plaque forming units or the like.
