"Lamivudine and Hepatitis B."

According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 19th International Congress of Chemotherapy, held July 16-21, 1995, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, "There are approximately 300 million chronic carriers of hepatitis B worldwide. The carrier state is a significant risk factor for the development of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Lamivudine [(-) enantiomer of 2',3' dideoxy,3'thiacytidine] is a potent antiviral agent for hepatitis B. Oral lamivudine at doses of 100 mg or greater per day significantly reduced serum HBV-DNA in patients with chronic hepatitis B.
