Safety of Blood for Transfusion Is Seriously Questioned

Issues emerging in the wake of the blood safety scandal in India include the allegation that more than half the blood is not screened for HIV, and available funds to fight AIDS have not been used.

Reporter Sanjay Kumar noted that problems surrounding India's blood safety, such as contaminated blood, were brought to light as allegations of pilferage were directed at the Indian Red Cross Society Blood Bank in Bombay ("Bombay Blood Scandal Raises Question of Safety," the Lancet, August 26, 1995;346:566).
