OSHA Standards Do Not Extend to Medical Students

Medical schools should be required to vaccinate their students against hepatitis B virus (HBV), according to faculty members of a medical school.

During clinical rotations, medical students are exposed to potential bloodborne pathogens, and proper immunization against HBV can prevent such infection, stated A. Thomas McRae III and Jeffrey L. Stephens, M.D., Mercer University School of Medicine in a commentary ("Hepatitis B Virus Vaccination of Medical Students: A Call for Rigorous Standards," JAMA, October 4, 1995;274(13):1081).
