Pig Organs Could Reduce Need for Human Donors

Research now being conducted at a number of centers may pave the way for transplanting pig organs into humans within a few years, says Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, scientist Jeffrey Platt, M.D.

He says one approach involving genetic modification of the donor should cut the risk of rejection and provide hope to the tens of thousands of Americans who die each year waiting for donor organs.
