A definite, residual risk of HBV transmission by blood products exists because a window of infectivity for hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevails, indicated Marie-Helene Elghouzzi, National Foundation for Blood Transfusion, Rungis, France, and colleagues ("Transmission of Hepatitis B Virus by HBV Negative Blood Transfusion," Lancet, October 7, 1995;346:964).
