Transfusion Implicated in Transmission of New Form of Hepatitis

A new form of hepatitis, hepatitis G virus (HGV), has been identified from plasma of chronic hepatitis patients who have received blood transfusions.

The new RNA virus, distinct from hepatitis C virus (HCV), belongs to the Flaviviridae family, Dr. Jungsuh P. Kim, Genelabs Technologies, Inc., Redwood City, California, told participants at the Blood Safety & Screening, held October 23-25, 1995, in Washington, D.C.

HGV has high prevalence in volunteer blood donors in the United States, according to preliminary surveys, Kim said.
