Tattoos of dragons, broken hearts and mermaids have long been associated with sailors, outlaws and rock 'n' roll musicians, but now these emblems of rebellion have gone mainstream.

Call it a sign of the times, but a lot of people - from adolescent "grunge rockers" to women who work on Wall Street - are staking their claim to individuality with a tattoo, nose ring or other form of extravagant physical ornamentation.
